west side story - tony finding maria and climbing up to her balcony railing to tell her how much he loves her even though they just met is so satoru coded like actually.

satoru knew he should've gone home hours ago and he had no business on this side of town anyway, he was a sorcerer. but he couldn't stand to go home without knowing if he'd ever see you again. especially not when your peach flavored lip gloss tasted so good.

"it doesn't open?" satoru pulled harder against the shut metal hatch above him with a disappointed expression as he stood on the railing of the balcony underneath him. "I don't have the key." You laughed.

"shit!" the snowy haired boy face palmed and you smiled wide at the profanity, he was so upset over such a little thing. you quickly shut your bedroom window, afraid your aunt was still awake.

cold metal pushed into your legs as you got on your knees to intertwine your fingers with his, your faces close. "i'd use my powers to break it, but I'd just get us both into trouble.." he sighed.

you thought for a minute,"you're a sorcerer?" he nodded. "you'd risk all that to be.. here...!?" he nodded again, pretty blue eyes staring deeply into your own. sorcerers weren't allowed in residential areas, jujutsu isn't always easy to control.

"you're worth defying the whole world." his nice white dress shirt a little dusty and his expensive dress shoes drenched from the dirty rain puddles he walked directly into when he finally found you. “I wanna be with you. I love you,” You laid on the metal now, trying to get as close as possible to him. “I love you” you whispered back, “I had a feeling that a miracle might happen tonight.. You’re all Ive prayed for.”

“But they’d never accept this satoru. Don’t you have that part of your life planned out for you anyway?— to marry the most powerful sorcerer and make ba—”

“I don’t care about that—I-I don’t want that, they don’t matter. I just wanna be with you” you swear you would almost melt from his words but still shook your head, he was so stubborn, was he even listening?

“And it’s not safe,” you continued, your eyebrows furrowed with worry. “I can control it— I’ll vow to never use jujutsu again if that’s what scares you” he countered every doubt you had with a solution, no matter if it was logical or not. “What if they—”

he cut you off, not rudely, more impatient to sort this out with you. “Then let’s run away together if you’re worried— somewhere nobody cares what I am or the rules or other bullshit like that. they can’t find us if we run away — I’ve seen others do it and they’re still missing.” he thought lightly about an old friend.

satorus fingers intertwined with you and those ‘damned metal bars’. You were so close to each other you could feel his breath on your cheek. “Run away?—Youre serious?” He nodded and you looked back at your window, your bedroom window — your whole life, and then you looked back to him, your potential new life. “To where?..Where won’t they find us?”

“Anywhere you want. I’ll run anywhere with you”

"Both the movies have such beauty to them. obv. different strengths between them. I imagine broadway is electric with it all too. I love that they aren't the rich kids but poor and just trying to make something of themselves. Tony has a real shot of getting out at the start, and Maria wants to go with him. The songs are wonderful. I go back and forth on if the ending is better in WSS, where Maria lives, or R&J where they both die. Perhaps WSS makes the love feel more real because Maria can defend it when everything is over?"

Rachel Zegler's casting as Maria in West Side Story, Disney's Snow White, and now Shakespeare's Juliet onstage is very interesting, because of the way all three characters are connected.

Maria, of course, is directly based on Juliet, since West Side Story is a Romeo and Juliet retelling.

But Disney's Snow White (the animated version) has a fair amount of Juliet-inspired imagery about her too. I've posted about this before. Like Juliet, Snow White is 14 years old, which I've always suspected is no coincidence. The imagery in "One Song," with Snow White standing on a balcony as the Prince woos her from below, is obviously Romeo and Juliet-like. Later, from the poisoned apple, Snow White falls into a state that looks like death, but isn't really death; unlike in the Grimm's tale, where she really dies but removing the piece of apple from her mouth brings her back to life, in the Disney film the victim of "sleeping death" is explicitly still alive all along. ("Buried alive!" as the Queen gloats.) In short, the apple is like Juliet's potion, except it doesn't wear off. And when the Prince approaches Snow White's coffin and kisses her lips, he looks like the classic image of Romeo approaching Juliet's bier and kissing her lips before his suicide. When Snow White was in production, the 1936 film version of Romeo and Juliet starring Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer had just been released, and Walt Disney had his animators watch the balcony and tomb scenes as a reference for Snow White and the Prince's two love scenes. Even Snow White's hairstyle looks like a slightly shorter version of Norma Shearer's hairstyle as Juliet. And in 1939, on the heels of Snow White's great success, her voice actress Adriana Caselotti spoke the line "Wherefore art thou Romeo?" during the Tin Man's song in The Wizard of Oz.

How strangely fitting that the current decade should see Juliet, Maria, and Snow White all played by the same actress!

(For that matter, Rachel Zegler isn't the only West Side Story Maria with a Disney Princess connection. Natalie Wood, who played Maria in the original 1961 film, was one of the actresses used by Disney animators as a model for Belle in Beauty and the Beast – allegedly they had photos of her in the studio to literally draw inspiration from – and the 1961 film's camera angles as Tony dies in her arms are recreated fairly closely for the Beast's "death" in Belle's arms. But that's another story.)
